Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean that Scott’s Run Nature Preserve should be off your list of things to do near Ashby at McLean. The preserve is home to a grove of ancient hemlocks, and they keep their deep green color and beautiful branches all year long. Scott’s Run Nature Preserve is also the site of the popular Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail, a well-kept and frequently visited path that draws visitors from across the US every year. Luckily, it’s in your own back yard, and a little snow or ice shouldn’t keep you from its scenic outlooks or peaceful corridors beneath the trees. Scott’s Run Nature Preserve also includes several water features, so depending on the temperature when you visit, you might be able to see a frozen waterfall or glass-like pond.
There are two entrances to Scott’s Run, both with parking lots and trailheads to explore. Visit the preserve via Georgetown Pike, north west of the Capital Beltway.
